The Restoration of Burnaby's Interurban 1223

The Friends of 1223 held an open house on the 18th of September 2005.
Much progress has been made since we visted the project in 2003

Work Continues on the 1223

This 1912 St. Louis Car Co. Interurban from the Burnaby Village Museum collection once carried passengers through Burnaby on the BC Electric Railway tracks. It is now being restored by the Friends of Interurban 1223 with the support of the City of Burnaby and guidance from museum staff.

Now four years into the restoration, the tram has regained much of its former glory. A new electrical system is hidden behind the restored and beautifully varnished walls and ceiling. Gleaming brass ceiling vents, luggage racks and hardware have been cast, machined, assembled and installed. New vestibules grace each end of the tram and a new curved bargeboard wraps around and completes the exterior wall above the windows. New window sashes and exterior doors are being varnished and painted.

The exterior metal sidewalls and trim are fixed, filled, primed ready for the first coat of red. The Friends are getting ready for the upholstery of the 18 rattan covered seats and for the recovering of the roof with canvas.

It is a real pleasure for all involved to see the tram coming back together.
